1 + 1 = 4?

Filed under: General, (I)Rational Conception - Abstract Thought — marc @ 3:48 pm

So, one of my friends and co-workers Eric, just came to my office and asked if I had a couple AA batteries that he could borrow. I searched and looked and finally found two in a Maglite flashlight I had in my backpack. I held the flashlight up and said “here’s a couple” and he said “Uh, you don’t have 4? OK, I’ll keep looking”.

I could have sworn that “a couple” meant two. I think he’s just focused elsewhere - his last day here is tomorrow.

MS150 update and Thanks!!!

Filed under: General, Outdoors — marc @ 9:03 am
National Multiple Sclerosis, UT Chapter

I’m always amazed by the generosity of my friends and family at this time of year. With only a week and a half, I not only raised the minimum for participation in this year’s ride but had to change my goal twice! I want to thank everyone who has contributed financially as well as those who support me in other ways each and every year for the MS150! I can’t do it without you and I really appreciate your kindness.

Here’s the original post about the ride and a direct link to my MS150 page.

Pidgin support for MSN sucks!

Filed under: Linux, Tech — marc @ 2:38 pm

Wow, I have several friends that use MSN and I use Pidgin to communicate with them. They have told me time and time again that I always appear off line when I am not or have been on line all day. I get this message a lot: “Message could not be sent because a connection error occurred:” when sending messages to them. (more…) (127 words)

I’m going to be riding the Multiple Sclerosis 150 mile benefit ride this year - again! Many were able to support me through encouragement as well donations to help me reach my fund raising goals. This is also a chance for me to connect with many friends who I haven’t heard from for a long time so drop a line when you get a chance - It would be great to hear from you again.

I want better support for digitizer pads on Linux!

Filed under: Linux, (I)Rational Conception - Abstract Thought, Tech — marc @ 8:45 am

I don’t want to have to go through some winding, confusing process of reading HOWTOs, hand editing xorg.conf files, restarting X over and over again just to get decent support for my wacom digitizer pad. Especially when the experience on windows and mac is completely painless.

New headlights for the Jeep

So, I was really upset a month ago when one of my headlights in my Jeep Cherokee went out. It’s not the first time and that’s actually the reason why I was upset. I just replaced both of them one year ago and again, a year before that! For some reason I’ve felt that headlights should last longer than one year (apparently, misguided in these perceptions). They seem that they are not made of tissue and therefore one should expect them to not function like a short term, disposable item.

Nokia to buy Trolltech, makers of QT GUI library

Filed under: Linux, Tech — marc @ 8:46 am

Wow, first it’s announced recently that MySQL will be bought by Sun and now Trolltech by Nokia. It’s pretty interesting, as I see Nokia’s primary interest in the embedded market. I wonder if this will translate into less focus on the desktop versions of the GUI tool kit.

The press release from Trolltech can be found on their site. (more…) (118 words, 2 images)

Sick

Filed under: General, (I)Rational Conception - Abstract Thought — marc @ 10:54 pm

The only thing good about being sick is that I get to sound like Barry White for a while. Whereas White was often affectionately referred to as “The Man with the Velvet Voice”, being sick, just makes me sound like him. It’s hard to make out with anyone while coughing up a lung.

Nikon D200 and 55-200 Nikkor lens for Sale. Mint Condition.

I have recently upgraded my camera and purchased a new Nikon D300 to replace my D200 which I bought in the fall last year. The D200 that I am selling is in extremely good condition. It has always been well cared for and has had very few pictures taken on it.

In addition to the D200 camera body, I am including a Nikkor 50-200mm lens and the new cables, battery and charger that came with my D300 to replace the original used D200 items. All the original packaging and manuals (in both english and spanish) will be included as well as the Nikon D200 Digiatal Field Guide by David D. Busch.
